You can now check packaging on many products for straightforward information on whether you can recycle it or not, locally.

Leading retailers, including all the major supermarkets, many High Street retailers and DIY chains, have joined forces to introduce the on-pack recycling label so that you can see, at a glance, which packaging you can recycle. Many household brands are also using the new labelling system across their ranges as are a growing number of small and specialist producers.

All participants share a commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their packaging.

The scheme provides clear guidance using three easily recognisable symbols:

Widely recycled

‘widely recycled’ is where 65% or more of UK local authorities have collection facilities for the packaging material in their area;

Check local recycling

‘check local recycling’ is where 15% to 65% of UK local authorities have collection facilities for the packaging material in their area; and

Not currently recycled

‘not currently recycled’ is where less than 15% of UK local authorities have collection facilities for the packaging material in their area.

‘Collection facilities’ mean the recycling collection service from your home provided by your local authority together with ‘bring banks’ that you find in supermarket car parks or at local authority recycling centres.

Recycling schemes vary across the country so to help you find out exactly what you can and can’t recycle in your area, check the ‘postcode locator’ on www.recyclenow.com; if you are still not sure, contact your local council.

You can see which retailers and brands are participating in the scheme by checking here. If you can’t find your favourite retailer or brand why not write to them suggesting that they join? A suggested letter template is available here but please add any other points you would like to make.
