Local Authorities Over the coming months, on-pack recycling labels will be gradually phased in by Britain’s leading retailers and brands, to provide consumers with more information on recycling of packaging. The scheme which is being led by the BRC (British Retail Consortium) supported by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme), has been developed to reduce consumer confusion and provide simple advice on what they can and cannot recycle based on access to recycling facilities. The label uses the Recycle Now iconography which is used by more that 90% local authorities in England. There are three categories of label: • ‘widely recycled’: For those materials that can be commonly recycled (at least 65% of local authorities offer the necessary recycling facilities at kerbside and/or Household Waste Recycling Centre/Bring Banks); • ‘check local recycling’: For those materials that can be recycled, but where availability of facilities varies across the country (15% to 65% of local authorities offer the necessary facilities). Consumers are encouraged to check their local services before attempting to recycle packaging labelled in this way; and • ‘not currently recycled’: For those materials that can be recycled by fewer than 15% of local authorities. ![]() In addition packaging can include an optional message to visit www.recyclenow.com to see which items are collected locally. WRAP will regularly update the data which underpins the scheme and determines which category different materials and packaging formats fall in to. The plan is that on pack recycling labelling will be introduced gradually into shops. However, over the coming months you may see an increase in enquiries from residents, regarding their local recycling facilities, prompted in particular by packaging labelled ‘check local recycling’. To see which materials fall into this category, please refer to the matrix shown in the FAQ’s. To prepare for this, it is important that information on your recycling services is available and easily accessible to residents via your website. In addition, please ensure that you have supplied WRAP and Valpak with the most up to date information, in order to ensure that the Recycle Now and Recycle-more websites contain accurate information for individuals seeking information about services in their area. Updating your recycling information: Local Authorities can update their recycling information by logging onto the recycle-more website: www.recycle-more.co.uk/la/rms_login.aspx Editing your recycling data on recycle-more will automatically update the Recycle Now website. Changes to kerbside schemes should also be emailed to: LGS@wrap.org.uk. Local Authorities in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales The On-pack Recycling Label is a UK-wide labelling scheme that incorporates the Recycle Now iconography. Data underpinning the three label categories is representative of the situation across England and the Nations. If an individual who lives in one of the British Nations visits the www.recyclenow.com website and inputs their postcode they will automatically be redirected to the following websites: Scotland - www.sort-it.org.uk Wales - www.recyclenow.com. A link is also provided to www.wasteawarenesswales.org.uk. Northern Ireland - www.recyclenow.com. Additional resources for local authorities WRAP has produced a web template and a press release template to help local authorities to keep residents informed about local recycling and the On-Pack Recycling Label. These can be downloaded from www.recyclenowpartners.org.uk/local_authorities/index.html by clicking on the 'Download Area' link.
