Retailers and Brand Owners SIGN UP NOW TO USE THE NEW EASY TO UNDERSTAND RECYCLING LABEL FOR CONSUMERS Meet consumer demand for information on how to recycle their packaging by joining the new UK-wide On-Pack Recycling Label scheme which aims to increase household recycling rates through standardised messaging for consumers. Branded product manufacturers, food and drink manufacturers and retailers are being encouraged to sign up to the On-Pack Recycling Label Scheme recently launched by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) supported by recycling experts WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). Based on the WRAP Recycle Now iconography the new label is made up of a hierarchy of three core messages, namely the packaging component, material type and recyclability status. It provides companies with a common format to communicate to consumers which packaging can and cannot be recycled. It will also contribute significantly to retailers’ and food and drink brands’ ambition to provide more advice to consumers on how best to recycle or otherwise recover used packaging. The label has been developed as a result of substantial market research which concluded that consumers wanted more information, presented in a consistent way, on what packaging materials they can recycle. To administer the scheme the BRC has set up a not for profit company, OPRL Ltd. There is a small annual subscription fee of £700 for companies signing up to use the label (£275 for charities and small independent businesses with an annual turnover of less than £5million). This will cover the cost of monitoring the scheme to ensure it is being correctly implemented and not being used by unlicensed users, along with providing advisory services and reports, administered by WRAP, for licensed users. |
